Did anyone else get the notification in-game with the free 1000 gold? I almost fainted in disbelief. When did they start doing that?

Not of what it originally said. It did say something like this: "The gods are happy with your service that you have completed. Click here to claim 1000 gold."

You click it and you get the gold. I received a report saying: You have been credited 1000 gold.

Just checked, I got 1 x 1000 and 1x500 over a few weeks but there wasn't a 1500 I must have just added them up

i got the 1k gold package 3-4 weeks ago, grepo emailed me saying my town was missing me and if i was to come back the would credit me with the gold, after logging in the gold was there whoopppeee

From what I know there was an action on the Dutch servers comparable with this.
Everyone who bought an amount of gold had a chance to receive some for free.
Eventually (after some fuss) our CM talked with Inno and everybody had the chance to receive free gold (we saw the original action as an unfare one).

It's a so-called A/B-test, or at least it was on the Dutch servers.
